This book won the Newbery Medal for 2002. It was published by Dell Yearling in February 2003. A Single Shard has 152 pages with no illustrations. The price was $5.99, and it was well worth every penny. This story takes place in a small village on the west coast of Korea, mid-to late twelfth century. It is historical fiction. This book is about a boy named Tree-ear who lives with Crane-man. They're very poor so they live under a bridge, and struggle to get food. Tree-ear spies on his neighbor, a potter, because he dreams of being one himself. The potter, Min, lives with his wife. One day, when there is no sign of Min, even though it's a "throwing day", Tree-ear sneaks into a shed and discovers finished pottery! He accidently dropped a piece of pottery. We really liked this book. A Single Shard would be enjoyed if you like historical fiction and a little advernture too. Even though we liked it , boys might like it better. They might like it better because the main character is a boy (Tree-ear) who goes on an adventure. There was also a part we were sweating because we didn't know what would happen next. To find out what happens, read this book. It's definately worth your time.
