This book has a good plot and definitely, unusual vocabulary. The setting takes place, half in USA, and half in Africa. Some main themes in this book are the friendship between relatives, and being able to do things for each other, meaning mentally and physically.

My tastes about the book were on how the author says a lot about Berry’s sister, Laura, and her death, also on how Berry misses her so much! My favorite quote is I would think that this book could be in both the “junk section”, and the “learning section”. The “junk section”, because it has a lot of words you usually don’t here in everyday conversations (swear words), but they are not too bad, as you can see this book is should only be for readers that are pre-teens or teens and up. Not only do the swear words make this more of an adult book, but it had a lot of complicated vocabulary and, sophisticated moments that young children wouldn’t understand.

"Born in Chicago, Illinois, Carolyn Coman was a member of the first graduating class of Hampshire College in Amherst Massachusetts. Having worked as a hand bookbinder and as an editor at an educational publishing house for several years, Ms. Coman now writes full time. She lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts with her children---17-year-old Anna and 7-year-old David. In 1995, the book WHAT JAMIE SAW was a Newbery Honor Award recipient as well as a National Book Award Finalist.”
